If you buy one thing for New Year's Eve, make it the boots. Unlike a sequin dress, they come back out repeatedly — a disco party, Halloween, a concert. Gold suits the warm lighting of most parties; silver is easier to wear again with ordinary clothes.
Two rules, both learned the hard way
Never wear new shoes on the night. Wear them for an hour at home first, in the socks or tights you plan to wear. New Year's Eve is the worst possible place to discover where a boot rubs.

- Or texture instead: a heavy knit, a corduroy jacket, a satin-collar blazer. Something that catches light without announcing itself.
- Good boots. Chelsea boots or polished leather. Not trainers, unless the party is explicitly casual.
- Skip the novelty. Light-up glasses and sequin bow ties are a costume, not an outfit — fine if that is the party, out of place otherwise.
Doing it without buying anything
